Smarty Pants Presents
"Is Life Worth Living?"
An Erik the Librarian Mystery

[scene opens inside a building marked "Library Montana Branch", as Erik sits alone at the reference desk talking to himself]
ERIK: [flipping through a book] Oh, this intrigues me! This, this opens up my mind! So many patterns and connections, oh!
[he picks up a tape recorder and begins talking into it]
ERIK: Idea for a mystery! Is life worth living? A combination of philosophy and fiction which will attempt to answer the central question of existence ... Is it worth it?! All the isolation, the loneliness--
[he stops, as a young female patron (played by Kelly Kapoor from "The Office") walks into the library]
ERIK: [slowly gets up, with mouth agape]
FEMALE PATRON: [walks up to the desk] Hello.
ERIK: Hello, I'm Erik. May I ... compare you to a summer's day?
FEMALE PATRON: [gives a confused look] Um, sure ...
ERIK: You are more beautiful and more fair ...
[he laughs nervously]
ERIK: Rough winds may shake the darling buds of May, but you are smokin'!
[he waits for a reaction, but gets none]
ERIK: Have you seen "The Mask?" We have it on DVD! I mean, you don't even have to pay to watch it, not like Blockbuster or something!
FEMALE PATRON: Um, where are the maps?
ERIK: Maps! Oh, I love maps! You can travel in your mind with maps!
[he turns around and starts singing]
ERIK: Oh, the places you can go with maps! You can reach your destination using pure imagination!
[he stops singing and turns back towards the patron]
ERIK: I wrote that myself ...
[he looks just in time to see the young lady running out the front door]
ERIK: Is it worth it? The constant suffering, the unending struggle of daily losses and defeats! Is it worth it?!
[he pauses, then slams his hand down on the table]
ERIK: Yes, it is worth it, to have known such beauty!
[cut to an exterior shot of the library]
ERIK: [from off camera] Oh, yes!
[cut back to Erik, as he begins talking into the tape recorder again]
ERIK: Idea for a mystery! The brilliant librarian! The story of a genius who taps into the power of love, and it skips his heart like a stone through time!
